Social Brain's Ryan Skelton and Ian Hopkinson from Mad Scientist Digital got together for a coffee talk about how AI is being used in business - and particularly marketing - today. Everything will be different in AI next month as such is the way with this frothy tech, but these were observations as of late July 2026.

In this episode of Brain Rot, Ryan & Ian look at dozens of ways AI is changing business, not all for the better.

They covered everything from AI search and "vibe coding" to privacy, automation, and the implications of AI based communications.

One observation captured something many of us have been noticing without having a name for it. The AI "Potemkin business." These are businesses that, upon inspection, are little more than a shell offering services without human expertise to back them up.

The term comes from the idea of a Potemkin village—a facade built to create the illusion of wealth. From a distance, everything looks authentic. Get a little closer, though, and you discover there's nothing behind it.

This is one use for AI becoming increasingly common. AI has made it incredibly easy to create the appearance of expertise.

Today, someone can build a sleek website in a few hours, generate persuasive sales copy, produce graphics, automate their email campaigns and even create a digital avatar that speaks on camera. To a potential customer, the business can look every bit as established as one that's been operating for twenty years.

We're entering a period where it will become harder to judge businesses by how polished they appear. Professional branding, clever copy and sophisticated automation are no longer reliable indicators of capability. They're increasingly available to anyone with an internet connection and access to free AI tools. These elements are a baseline level of entry.

This makes genuine industry expertise more valuable than ever.

The businesses that deliver results are not the ones producing the highest volume of content or automating the most tasks. They're the ones that combine AI with years of experience, sound judgement and an understanding of platforms & media and the industries they serve.

Customers will still ask difficult questions. Projects will still encounter unexpected problems. Regulations will still need interpreting. And relationships matter more than ever.

Enjoy this rambling conversation! 😂
